Garden Lodge is situated right in the heart of Youlgrave. Along the street, marking the centre of the village is the Fountain, which is a large round stone edifice. Visitors often mistake it variously as a tomb, an air vent, or perhaps a war memorial; it was in fact a reservoir, dating from the early 19th century, that filled with fresh spring water, piped from the hillside behind Mawstone Mine.

Just a short walk from Garden Lodge you will find a Post Office, newsagent and two butchers /general stores which can provide most basic provisions. Supermarkets and a wider range of shops can be found in Bakewell (3.5 miles) or Matlock (8 miles). There are three pubs in the village which all serve meals at lunchtimes and in the evening. There are restaurants and take-aways in both Bakewell and Matlock. The former Co-op Stores is now a thriving Youth Hostel.

Three long distance footpaths pass through Youlgrave, the Alternative Pennine Way, The White Peak Way and the Limestone Way. There are also many local footpaths and bridleways for circular walks.

Fountain Square Youlgrave

The Church of All Saints dates back to the14th century and its rich and varying architectural styles and ornamentation are evident throughout. The painted glass window behind the altar was designed by Edward Burne-Jones and made in the William Morris workshops. Morris himself evidently designed the four angels at the top of the picture.

The ancient art of Well Dressing, unique to the Derbyshire area, thrives in Youlgrave. Each year, during June, five wells are dressed in Youlgrave with intricate and detailed pictures created from flowers, berries, leaves and other natural materials. The origins of well dressing may date back as far as Celtic times and are generally believed to have stemmed from a desire to give thanks for the blessed gift of water. Villages all over Derbyshire uphold the tradition and well dressing events take place from May to September. Phone the Tourist Information Centre on 01246 345777 for more information.
